Helwing Villamizar (Caracas, 1974) is a New York-based artist whose intricate palimpsest drawings, abstract decalcomania paintings, and "resistance objects" interrogate the intersections of personal history, geopolitical forces, and systems of knowledge. His work, rooted in a process of layering and reconfiguration, explores the self as a mutable structure—both shaped by and in defiance of ideological frameworks.
Drawing from the socio-political shifts in Venezuela and a transnational and religious upbringing that traverses center and periphery, Villamizar constructs visual and conceptual spaces where historical sedimentation, poetic rebellion, and emerging group dynamics coalesce in a critical dialogue on representation and agency within the contemporary cultural landscape.
Villamizar has shown his work at Galería Blasini, Sala Mendoza, Sala RG, Museo de Bellas Artes, Museo Alejandro Otero, and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, as well as at the X Iberoamerican Art Fair, the International Biennial of Contemporary Art ULA, and the KuZo Culture Zone Sziget Festival.
